Zhang(1) Mengchang [12388] Mengchang's original mingzi was Jingxuan, which was the same as his younger brother Maoxuan (not in dataset). The other brothers also have different generational names suggesting segmentation with this generation. Mengchang has no descendants listed in the XTS genealogical tables, but Zhu(1) Xi, WJ, 95A.1a-1b has complete genealogy to Zhang(1) Jun [211] in which the generational names of Maoxuan's son and grandson match those of Mengchang's son and grandson in Zhu(1) Xi's [3257] genealogy. The inescapable conclusion is that no descendants of Mengchang were in a position to provide Ouyang(1) Xiu [1384] and the other compilers of the Xin Tang Shu with a genealogy at the time of the preparation of the genealogical tables whereas Maoxuan's descendants did (very detailed through the 8th generation descendants of Maoxuan. This both establishes genealogical continuity between Tang and Song and explains why collateral branches of a Tang ancestor are missing in later genealogies. |
