Yang(2) Ye(2) [14257] Did not know books (bu zhi shu) (illiterate ?). He was recruited by Taizong when he took Taiyuan and Ye proved to be a courageous and skilled officer. In 986, he was defeated in battle by the Khitan and did not eat for three days and died. For affinal kinship with Zhe(1) Deyi [14231], see Jinshi cuibian, 147.6b. Ouyang(1) Xiu's [1384] funerary inscription for Yang(2) Qi(2) [16255] identifies Ye as his granduncle. Qi's three patrilineal ancestors were residents of Linzhou, Xinqin county (modern Shenmu county) and seem to have been the hereditary military governors of the area. I suspect that Qi's great grandfather, Hongxin [16252], was either father or uncle (which is the identification I use) of Ye and that Ye's residence in Taiyuan was the result of his efforts in assisting Taizong in his conquest of the Northern Han.
